San Bernardino’s rich natural landscapes are home to diverse ecosystems and wildlife. Several local organizations are actively working to conserve these environments for future generations.
San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust
Since 1995, the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust (SBMLT) has been dedicated to acquiring and protecting over 15,000 acres of forest open space and wildlife habitats within the San Bernardino National Forest. Their efforts ensure the lasting public benefit of the natural mountain environment.
Plunge Creek Conservation Project
The San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District spearheaded the Plunge Creek Conservation Project to restore natural water flows and reconnect the land with its waterways. This initiative enhances groundwater recharge and revitalizes habitats for endangered species like the San Bernardino kangaroo rat and the Santa Ana River woollystar.
Bear Valley Protection Society
Committed to preserving the San Bernardino National Forest, the Bear Valley Protection Society focuses on removing illegal dumpsites, combating invasive species, and restoring damaged areas. Their volunteer-driven efforts have significantly improved the forest’s health and accessibility.
Upper Santa Ana River Wash Habitat Conservation Plan
Developed through extensive collaboration, this plan balances economic activities with environmental preservation. It provides a framework for managing the Upper Santa Ana River Wash, ensuring the protection of native habitats while allowing for essential public services and infrastructure development.
These initiatives highlight the community’s commitment to safeguarding San Bernardino’s natural heritage, promoting a sustainable and thriving environment for all.
